  2. Our history

If you want to read Yiddish on the Internet, you need to have Hebrew fonts installed on your computer and use a browser that supports Hebrew encodings.

Attention Machintosh users: The Macintosh version of the Microsoft Internet Explorer doesn't seem to support Hebrew letters at all. The recommended browser for Mac is Mozilla/Firefox on OS X v.10.2 or higher.

Windows

Microsoft Internet Explorer (v. 5 or higher), Mozilla/Firefox, Netscape (v. 6.1 or higher) and Opera (v. 6 or higher) support Yiddish. If you cann't read Jewish letters, you probably need to install Hebrew fonts.
Hebrew support for Windows NT,2000 and XP:

UNIX

All recent versions of the Gecko-based browsers (Netscape, Mozilla, Firefox, Galeon, Epiphany), as well as Konqueror and Opera, support Yiddish, but Konqueror has much better support for rendering Hebrew ligatures, such as Komets-Alef.
Free Hebrew fonts for UNIX are available at the Culmus project. To install Culmus in Debian you can just run as root:

# apt-get install culmus

Similarly, Culmus is included in the FreeBSD port tree.
On FreeBSD, run the following commands as root:

# cd /usr/ports/hebrew/culmus/ && make install clean
# pkg_add -r iw-culmus

Macintosh

Classic Mac OS doesn't seem to have proper Yiddish support. Safari, the default browser in Mac OS X, works with Yiddish, but doesn't scale the letters and has some other ugly bugs; The Internet Explorer for Mac OS X does not seem to support Hebrew letters at all. We recommend to use Firefox or Mozilla, and Mac OS X version 10.2 or higher.
